What a summer right!? Time with this kiddos, vacations, swim days, festivals, hikes, camps, beach days. Most of us LOVE summer and we jam pack it full of family time and fun! Then before we know it, store shelves start filling up with school supplies (as you look at your watch, it’s way too early for this), long sleeves are popping into the stores and the days are getting shorter.
School is right around the corner so you spend the last week or too wrapping up your favorite activities and have a blast buying your crew their new supplies and clothes for school. It’s actually exciting and everyone is looking forward to it even if it’s just for the new school supplies ;). Woah, first day of school is here, today! That came so crazy fast! You wonder if you are off a week? Of course you’re not, (the return of hustle and bustle is still familiar). Man, it sure feels like it though.
You have your kids fill out the letter board, take adorable pictures of those beautiful babies and send them into class holding back tears as you beam with pride. On your ride home, you start reflecting on those sweet blessings and the memories of summer. It really was great! You couldn’t get everything in but there is always next summer. This summer was good though and exactly what you all needed!
You then come home to a SUPER quiet, empty house. You were just joking around with friends about how ready you are to have the kiddos back at school I mean, the bickering was driving you crazy (which is still true)! Ultimately though and despite the sibling rivalry, you start feeling a little down and a little lonely. I mean thank goodness the kids talked you into a puppy right!
Though the weather is still warm, the fun and freedom that summer brings is gone. Not only is school back in session, sports and activities are as well. It’s back to rigid schedules. Bon Fires are being turned in for late night homework sessions and the kiddos are almost too busy to bicker although, the car is always a good time (they will always make room for it). 🙂
Whether you work outside of the home, in the home or you are a stay at home mom, I think many of us get a little bit of the “Back To School Mommy Blues”.
Just know that you are not alone! Now, before I make you even more blue, I will jump right in and give you some solutions that will perk you back up to be at your best when that crazy crew comes home and needs you!
Admit You Have the Blues
First, I think it’s a good idea to put it out there with yourself. I think any time you are down or sad or stressed or maybe dealing with a little anxiety, you need to admit it. That alone helps deflate those funky feelings. Again, those feelings are very normal and we all go through it so just take it for what it is. A little bit of a funk.
Quick Note: If you have more than the blues and struggle with depression or anxiety, that can be normal is well. It is important in those cases that you see ourt professional help. Hugs!
Pray / Meditate
Man, I wonder if God is getting sick of me yet? Probably not. Although I have been praying way more lately, you can never go to him too much. I have a few things that have been getting me grumpy lately but I am so grateful that he listens, always! It is comforting to know that my words are heard (John 5:14) and that God can get me through tough times big or small.
Girl Tribe Time
In the past 2 weeks I have had dinner or coffee with mulitiple friends. I get it, you and your friends are SOOO BUSY! Can I just say “Stop it”! Stop using that excuse okay! Frankly, everyone is busy and that is even more reason that you need to get together with your girls! Likely, your schedules haven’t aligned and you have some catching up to do. Not only are your needing time with them, they are needing time with you. Keep in mind, it doesn’t have to be long. Even a quicke lunch can fill your bucket more than you think
Even though summer is winding down, holidays are around the corner so stay with those fitness routines. I think classes are a blast and keep me motivated because I feel like everyone notices when I am missing (ie. being lazy) so it’s great accountability! At a minimum, take the dog on a walk (this is likely your job for the next 9 months anyway). Or better yet, grab your friend that you need to catch up with and have her grab her dog! How awesome will your night be? Maybe end it with a drink to top it off!
Seriously though, we’ve all heard it “Exercise creates endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” -Elle Woods. True story and not only because Elle said so. Although, she has great street cred! 😉
Go on a Date
It’s likely that the new changes aren’t only affecting you. Your hubby feels the stress and change in both you and your kiddos. Sneaking out for a bit will do wonders for you both! It’s a great time to catch up wiith him and get some much needed lovin’. Maybe you’lll even hget to dress up a bit! Also, who better to brag about your amazing children starting the school year off with a bang than your hubby?
Let Those Babies Talk
Let those sweet babies talk. These first few weeks of school, they are running out all smiles! Talking all about their friends and teachers and all of the exciting things they have to look forward to this year! They have been waiting ALL DAY to share all of this awesomeness with you and now all they need is you to listen. So, let them talk and listen with love and pride! I promise that your your bucket will be so full!
You are doing AMAZING Mama and remember, those “Back To School Mommy Blues” are normal. Accept them, maybe cry a little and then pick yourself up and show yourself love! You only have a few hours before the bell rings!
